Into the Future - Technology Leads the Way
At no other time in history has science had such a central role in developing technologies that will help to both maximize the use of the earth's finite resources. Australia and the U.S. have long been at the forefront of emerging technologies. This session will not only highlight some of those technologies but it will also provide some insight into the developmental decision-making process.

Australian LNG and North American Shale Gas: A Big Bet on Future Energy? Sponsored by Maxwell Drummond International
Australia is seeing increases in large gas developments both offshore North West Shelf and onshore Queensland due to expected future energy needs in the Pacific Basin. The U.S. gas business has been under price pressure resulting from lower demand and a significant increase in shale gas base level production and imported LNG. How will the interplay of geopolitical pressures, regulatory environments, supply and market conditions influence future developments?

Clean Energy for the Future: Coal Seam Gas and Renewables
Although rarely discussed outside industry circles, coal seam gas helped drive a tenfold increase in the value of oil and gas deals in Australia in 2008. An ongoing flow of deals in Australia's coal seam gas sector saw international oil majors funnel more than $12 billion into the sector over the last two years. Peter Beattie will discuss Australia's experience with the industry's "new" gas.

Business Considerations Regarding Climate Change
Carbon emission programs have grown rapidly in recent years. Under these programs, some companies that emit greenhouse gases (GhG) have already had to manage their carbon emissions so as to know how many emissions credits to buy or sell. However, a new regulation from the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) will start regulating a larger population of facilities in the United States beginning in January 2010. While the EPA's new mandatory GhG reporting rule will only require GhG reporting for affected facilities, successful implementation of this new rule will help companies better manage GhG issues going forward. This discussion will highlight the opportunities and challenges that companies should consider as they develop their carbon market readiness plan.
  • Herb Listen, Partner,  Ernst & Young
Opportunities and Challenges in the Emerging Policy Environment
Terms such as clean energy, green tech, and cap and trade have become ubiquitous in response to growing demand for calculating the environmental costs associated with energy supply and use. Particularly in response to climate change, governments and the private sector in both the U.S. and Australia are implementing policies and mobilizing capital. With emerging policies as a backdrop, this panel will examine the opportunities and challenges associated with future investment, corporate adaptation, and best practices in response to this new paradigm.
